What is subdomain takeover?

The attacker somehow gains control over one subdomain with the intent of redirecting users to a malicious website.

In practice, attackers perform this action because it usually results in a website not earning ad revenue, or it may increase the number of page views that the website receives.

This happens when the subdomain has CNAME in the DNS but no host is providing content for it.
